Renovations have been a popular activity during the pandemic. Lil Blue’s front porch had been in need of repairs for a while. I had a few contractors quote me. The prices of materials had skyrocketed until June of this year and since returning to normal. The quote for repairs seemed fair until the contractor arrived. They started to take the porch ceiling out and found more than he was included in his original estimate. I got the call Friday at work with an increase of $3k in additional labor.
Yes, we live and learn about contractors, but I thought since some locals had recommended this fellow it would be ok. He seemed great, but then never stepped back on the property again. He sent his crew of amateurs to complete the work. Needless to say, I had to be involved every step of the way including inspecting their work and arguing the rework and ultimately finishing the job myself, $8k later.
Hard lessons learned. Hindsight, I wish I had waited the extra 2 months until my favorite contractor (who did my kitchen reno) was available and paid the same price for the design I originally wanted.

As you can see the only improvement in this project was the cable rails and wider step. However, Lil Blue’s beautiful views are less restricted now. Springtime will bring a new walkway and landscaping renovation!
